Bay and Bow Windows
Three or more panels projecting outward from the wall. Adds space, light, and a defining exterior feature.
Bay and bow windows extend outward from the wall, creating a projected alcove that adds both interior floor space and a dramatic visual presence from the street. They’re among the most distinctive window types available, and when installed properly, they become a defining feature of the room and the home’s exterior.
Bay Windows vs. Bow Windows
Bay windows typically have 3 panels: a large fixed center panel flanked by two smaller side panels set at 30 or 45-degree angles. The angular geometry creates a sharp-edged alcove. Bay windows are common in Victorian and Craftsman homes and work well in living rooms, dining rooms, and master bedrooms.
Bow windows have 4 or more equal panels arranged in a gentle curve, creating a rounded alcove rather than a hard angle. Bow windows have a softer, more formal look and are often found in traditional and Colonial-style homes. The curve requires more precise installation but creates a more graceful projection.
What You Gain Inside
Beyond the visual impact, bay and bow windows add usable space. The alcove floor area is large enough for a built-in seat with storage below, a small reading nook, or a plant shelf. In living rooms and breakfast areas, that extra square footage changes how you use the room. In older homes where square footage is fixed, a bay or bow window is one of the few ways to add functional space without a structural addition.
Natural Light
Because bay and bow windows wrap around the corner of the room at an angle, they capture light from multiple directions simultaneously. A north-facing room gets east and west light from the angled side panels. The effect is noticeably different from a flat wall of windows, even with the same total glass area.
Structural Considerations
Bay and bow windows require a support structure beneath the projection, a roof overhang or box seat above, and proper flashing where the window meets the exterior wall. Getting these details right is critical for preventing water infiltration and long-term structural stability. We build these as complete assemblies, including the seat board, knee wall or corbels, and roof cap, not just the window unit itself.
Energy Performance
The additional glass area of a bay or bow window means more surface for heat transfer than a flat window of the same rough opening size. We use Low-E glass as standard for bay and bow installations to offset that. Proper insulation of the seat board and knee wall is equally important: uninsulated wood in a projected bay is a cold bridge in winter and a heat source in summer.
We insulate and air-seal the entire assembly, not just the glass units. That full-assembly approach is what separates a well-performed bay window from one that drafts in winter and overheats in summer.

Frequently Asked Questions
A bay window has three panels: a large fixed center and two angled side panels at 30 or 45 degrees. A bow window has four or more equal panels arranged in a gradual curve. Bay windows have a sharper angular profile; bow windows are rounder and softer in appearance.
The projection of a standard bay window adds roughly 12 to 18 inches of depth to the alcove area, which is enough for a built-in window seat with storage below, a small reading nook, or a plant shelf. It is not counted as structural square footage for appraisal purposes, but it is fully usable interior space.
Yes. A bay window requires a support structure beneath the projection, a roof cap above, and proper flashing at the wall junction. We build the complete assembly including the seat board, knee wall, and exterior finish. Getting these details right is critical to preventing water infiltration and long-term structural settlement.
They can be when installed properly. The additional glass area is offset by using Low-E glass as standard. The seat board and knee wall must be fully insulated and air-sealed as part of the installation, not left as uninsulated framing, which would otherwise become a significant thermal weak point.
